EUGENE, Ore. — Lane Transit District is going green. It’s replacing its old buses with new hybrid-electric ones.
LTD says this will save an estimated $750,000 in operating costs.
LTD is footing the bill with a $2.5 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration’s State of Good Repair Program.
Besides a quieter and smoother ride, the biggest difference riders will notice is the bus entrance. The hybrid buses are considered low floor, meaning it has no steps and is more accessible.
“We’re excited about this because with this next bus purchase, we’ll be about 70 percent hybrid electric in our fleet, so were closing in on our ultimate goal of being 100 percent hybrid electric,” said LTD Directors of Communications Andy Vobora.
The new hybrid buses should be up and running by 2014.
