Luper Cemetery Holds Open House

luper cemeteryEUGENE, Ore. — Volunteers at the Luper Cemetery in Eugene are using this holiday weekend to teach the community a history lesson.

They are hosting an open house all weekend to share with visitors the back stories of the many people buried there. Organizers say this is one of the oldest cemeteries in the Willamette Valley.

Many of the streets in the Santa Clara area are named after people who are buried there. Volunteers hope people come out to explore what the cemetery has to offer.

“It’s just to make them aware of the history of the people that are buried here, the struggles that they went through; this cemetery has been vandalized and abused for years and we’re at a point where it’s easier to maintain,” said Russ Carey, a volunteer.

The open house runs from 9:00 a.m. Until 4:00 p.m. Monday.
