EUGENE, Ore. — The honor for veterans spread into a local historical cemetery Monday. Miniature flags marked their final place of rest at the Luper Cemetery open house. Now in its second year, volunteers said Memorial Day was a great time to share the stories inside the gates.
“We did it on Memorial Day because a lot of people pay their respects to people in cemeteries on that day and we do have two people here from the military from the 1800s,” said volunteer Russ Carey.
The three-day event is meant to educate people about local history, but also serves as a fundraiser. Money collected at the event is used to maintain as well as repair extensive vandalism back in 2009.
