Major EWEB Water Main Breaks

EUGENE, Ore. — A major water main broke early Thursday morning and left 34 EWEB customers without water for most of the day.

EWEB says the pipe that burst was a 16-inch pipe. That’s three times the size of the utility’s standard water main, and supervisors say this one looked like it burst due to corrosion.

“The pipeline is about 60 years old and construction methods that they used back then put the pipes right back into corrosive soil, as opposed to some of the techniques we use today,” said Mel Damewood, EWEB Engineering Manager.

The original break happened at the intersection of 18th Avenue and Oak Street, but flooding reached down to 18th and Pearl, too.
