Making a Difference: Sophia Perko

EUGENE, Ore. — There are a number of kids in our community looking for mentors to spend a little bit of time with them.

Volunteering and becoming a mentor at the Boys and Girls Club doesn’t have to take up too much of your time. If you can spare an hour, to these kids it will mean the world.

One very cool match is Tom Gilmour and his mentee Adam Cramer.

Gilmour is a retired rear admiral with the Coast Guard. He says the Boys and Girls Club allows him to be a kid again. And when his mentee Adam first came here, he wasn’t talking much. Now he’s got plenty to say and is touched that someone is there to offer him some extra special time.

“They help me by helping me think of stuff to do,” Cramer said.

Sophia Perko is in need of a mentor. She loves playing piano, and she says she loves sea animals.

If you’d like to be her mentor, call the Boys and Girls Club at 541-345-9939.
