Man Arrested for Assaulting Officer

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. — A man was arrested after biting and attempting to shoot a Cottage Grove Police officer early Wednesday morning, police said.

The Cottage Grove Police Department says an officer stopped 24-year-old Ronald Dale Obannon, Jr. at about 1 a.m. in the 1500 block of Hwy 99 North of Cottage Grove. Obannon had a warrant for his arrest for domestic assault. They say Obannon was uncooperative, so the officer called for backup.

Obannon reached for something in his pocket, so the officer tried to use his Taser, but it didn’t work.

While the officer took him to the ground, Obannon took out a .22 caliber pistol and pointed it at the officer. The officer pushed the gun away as it fired.

Obannon then bit the officer’s hand, causing severe bruising.

Police arrested Obannon after a second officer arrived. They found Obannon had a gunshot would to his hand. He was treated at the hospital and then lodged at the Lane County Jail on the following charges:

·Warrant (Assault IV Section 3/ Abuse prevention act)
·Attempted Murder
·Assault in the second degree
·Escape in the first degree
·Pointing a firearm at another
·Reckless endangering
·Unlawful use of a weapon
·Assaulting a public safety officer
·Unlawful possession of a firearm
·Felon in possession of a firearm
