The train was on its way to Seattle. Eugene Police say Amtrak personnel called them to report the man before the train got to Eugene.
When officers met it when it came in, they say the suspect locked himself in the bathroom and then set trash on fire.
“There’s a reasonable amount of damage inside the restroom. Smoke in a sleeper car is pretty evident throughout the car,” said Sgt. David Natt, Eugene Police Department.
Officers managed to get in and arrest the suspect. First, they took him to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Sgt. Natt told KEZI that the train car–a sleeper car–has been taken offline because it was filled with smoke.
Charges are pending for the suspect, whose name has not been released.
