Man Dies in Deputy Custody

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Roseburg police are trying to figure out what caused a man to die as sheriff’s deputies were arresting him.

Walter McKelvey died outside of a Ray’s Food Place in Canyonville Sunday night while Douglas County sheriff’s deputies were taking him into custody.

Investigators said McKelvey was acting strangely, even running into nearby traffic.

“There’s nothing suspicious about it. What’s unusual for us is, again, this is something that happens very rarely, and so we want to find out what happened and what caused this, and that’s why we’re doing the best we can to investigate it completely,” said Sgt. Jeff Eichenbusch, Roseburg Police Department.

The Roseburg Police Department is leading the investigation. Officers believe the collaborative effort will provide the most thorough and unbiased results. They are waiting for the toxicology report from the Clackamas County Medical Examiner.
