Police say 50-year-old Dennis Mitchell was driving at high speeds just north of Q Street and Pioneer Parkway.
Neighbors in the area heard the accident and called police around 5 a.m. Medical crews pronounced Mitchell dead on the scene.
“We don’t know at this point whether alcohol or drugs or anything were involved. All we know is that a person drove into a tree at high speed and is deceased,” said Sgt. Rich Charboneau.
Officers initially believed Mitchell’s dog was in the car and had run away. They learned the dog had just been put to sleep.
