SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A Springfield man is in the Lane County Jail for allegedly attacking two women Tuesday afternoon with a hammer and a pick ax.

Police say the women were attacked on the 900 block of L Street around 4 p.m.

A neighbor who witnessed the attack says the women ran down the street and called 9-1-1, but the attack didn’t stop there.

“All of a sudden I start hearing screaming and commotion, so immediately I grabbed their hands and I go inside,” said Springfield resident Melissa Gonzalez.

Gonzalez says the screams of help were coming from two women across the street who were being attacked.

“The guys has like an ice pick thing, and he starts chasing them and hits her on the side of her leg and…on her arm,” Gonzalez said.

Police say that attacker was 34-year-old Thomas Murphy. Police say the two women, both in their 40s, were walking by Murphy’s home when he started chasing them. One of the women tried to call 9-1-1, but investigators say Murphy hit the phone out of her hand.

“He takes the phone away from her and starts beating it with the ice pick,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez says she also called police shortly after she realized the women were being attacked. Neighbors say the attack caught them off guard because they live on a quiet street.

“It’s kind of a shock to me to hear that because I usually know what’s going on out here,” said Springfield resident Kevin Devine.

“I’m actually pretty surprised about that. Usually, this place is pretty quiet, and we notice if something weird is happening,” said Springfield resident Jon Marshall.

“It’s usually really calm. My kids and I can go outside in the yard, and we can play, and something like that really doesn’t happen,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez says the frightening attack quickly ended when police swarmed the neighborhood.

“They were here immediately. They handled the situation. They took him immediately. They took him away, and they didn’t sit here and linger,” Gonzalez said.

Springfield police say only one of the women was physically hurt. She was taken to the hospital with injuries. Police say Murphy faces multiple charges including two counts of attempted murder.

Lots of inaccuracies in this report. The attack happened on the same side of the street as the neighbor who called 911. There was one woman who was screaming for help and it was Tom’s mother, not the two women. She repeatedly asked the two women to call police, 911, then the neighbor in the interview, tried to get Tom to focus on her and go home. The two women stood on the corner, then after Tom’s mother asked them once again to call 911 they started to call and Tom knocked the phone to the ground and smashed it. They walked further up the street, Tom’s mother said lets go home now Tom, Tom yelled at the two women to get away now, run away, then looked off to his left as if he was listening to something, and started to run at the women, approximately 1/2 block up from the corner.
