“We heard the shots. We’re right on the other side of the road on the other side of the property,” said Darenda Brown.
Something neighbors said is unheard of in this part of town. “We overheard, we were like literally right on the other side of the property,” said Rhonda Berridge.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office said just after 5:30 p.m. it got a call about a man with multiple gunshot wounds in the front yard of the house. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
LCSO then took the homeowner, Brian Sears, in for questioning and early Saturday morning he was lodged in the Lane County Jail facing murder charges.
Some of Sears’ family members were at his home Saturday afternoon, and while they would not go on camera, his brother describes the shooting as surprising, but says the victim and Sears know each other and says the alleged victim has a child that lives with Sears and his family.
He said when the man came to pick up his child, the two got in an argument and shots were fired. The suspect’s brother said all five kids were home at the time of the shooting, but he’s unsure what the kids saw or heard and the family is still trying to figure out what led up to the fatal shooting.
Police investigated the scene of the shooting late into the night on Friday, Saturday morning the road’s back open and police tape removed from the scene. But, details as to what really happened are still unclear.
