Man in Costume Arrested for Menacing

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Police arrested a Springfield man after he approached a Springfield coffee kiosk dressed as a bank robber and holding an authentic looking airsoft gun.

At about 5:30 a.m. Friday, officers say a barista at Cool Beanz on West Centennial Boulevard locked herself inside the kiosk and called police after she saw a man wearing a mask on his head and carrying a rifle.

Before police arrived, they say the man, later identified as 30-year-old JohnMichael Alpers, knocked on the kiosk window and door to try to talk to the employee.

Police say Alpers had been drinking and was alleged to have been at a costume party at a local bar before he arrived at the coffee kiosk. Alpers also had a mask and a bandanna on his head, and he told police his costume was a bank robber.

Police took Alpers into custody at the Springfield Municipal Jail and found he had two authentic looking airsoft guns, a rifle and a pistol. He was lodged on charges for disorderly conduct and menacing.
