EUGENE, Ore. — One man is in jail and another in a local hospital after a stabbing at a popular Saturday destination. The Eugene Police Department says just before 10:00 a.m. Saturday a man stabbed another man in the back multiple times.

It happened on the sidewalk near the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza, right across the street from the Saturday market. But, Saturday Market organizers said this stabbing did not happen at the market and took place in an area that’s caused some problems in the past.

Organizers said they’re hoping to start a dialogue with Lane County about possible changes at the plaza to make it safe for everyone.

“But I think this incident just really brings it to the forefront that anything that we can do to make the corner of 8th and Oak as family friendly and welcoming as possible,” said Beth Little, Saturday Market manager.

Police said they’re still trying to figure out what led up to this stabbing. The suspect, Brian Frederick Ernest is lodged in the Lane County Jail. He’s facing charges of assault one and unlawful use of a weapon.

The victim is recovering in a local hospital and is in stable condition.
