MARCOLA, Ore. — Marcola’s history was honored by residents Saturday and Sunday in full-on festival style.
It’s the event’s 30th year and the celebration went out with a bang with a special church service and gospel performance.
The city was named after the wife of Postmaster Columbus Cole back in the early 1900s. Marcola, is a combination of her first and last name, Mary Cole.
“One of the unique things about the Mary Cole Celebration is that we always take time to honor a long-time resident of the Valley. And that’s a time where we reflect and say, ‘Thank you for preserving our history and promoting our community,’” said event coordinator Valery Rylands.
This year’s recipient to be Grand Marshall was Viola Hileman, a 70-year veteran resident.
