EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon Ducks finally have their starting quarterback. Redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota has been chosen by Ducks head coach Chip Kelly over returning sophomore Bryan Bennett.
Mariota, who is from Hawaii, hasn’t yet seen real game time like Bennett, who stood in at times for exiting QB Darron Thomas last year.
The decision was announced this morning by University of Oregon Assistant Sports Information Director Andy McNamara on Twitter saying, “Oregon head coach Chip Kelly has named redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota as the Ducks’ new starting quarterback #GoDucks”
Mariota had a standout performance at the Oregon spring game throwing for 202 yards and a touchdown while running for 99 yards and two scores on the ground.
