McKenzie-Willamette Workers Picket

picketSPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Workers from a local hospital took to the picket line Thursday, demanding better jobs and health care.

In front of the McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center in Springfield, the workers, from all parts of the hospital, say the hospital continues to post significant profits, yet recently laid off workers.

They claim the hospital is also raising the cost of employee health care and cutting other benefits.

“We’re asking for a cost of living increase. This time around they actually raised our health care quite a bit so what they’re offering us for our raises we wouldn’t even get a raise when you factor in what they’ve increased in our health care,” said Carey Myers, McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center housekeeper.

The rally was organized by SEIU Local 49, which represents the workers.

The hospital couldn’t be reached for comment.
