Migraines Could Permanently Change Brain

(CNN) — Your migraine might be doing more than just causing you discomfort. It might be hurting your brain.

While the pain of migraines is temporary, there’s new research out that suggests the effects are long lasting. Your brain’s health may be permanently changed by these painful headaches.

The new study, published in the journal Neurology, shows that people who suffer from migraines may be at risk of structural changes in the brain.

The researchers looked at 19 studies about migraines and concluded that those who get migraines have an increased risk of brain lesions, which are tiny scars on the brain. This is important because it may lead to a disruption of blood flow to the brain and increase your risk of a stroke.

This is really startling given that about 36 million people in our country suffer from migraines.

Experts say if you suffer from migraines, you should avoid smoking and keep your blood pressure and cholesterol low.

The goal is to decrease the frequency and severity of these migraines so they also recommend behavioral therapy as well. Less migraines, they conclude, will keep your brain healthier.
