EUGENE, Ore. — The mother of running legend Steve Prefontaine has passed away.
Elfreide Prefontaine died Tuesday at Sacred Heart Medical Center RiverBend, 12 days after suffering a fall at a Eugene assisted living facility. She was 88 years old.
Those who knew Prefontaine say she continued her son’s legacy after his death in 1975. She was also heavily involved in Eugene’s running community.
“She was a tough customer,” says Tom Heinonen, head of the University of Oregon Running Club. “People are saying she’s the one who made Pre who he was, and it’s a shame to see her gone now.”
Heinonen says Prefontaine continued to regularly attend Pre’s Classic and that she was an anchor for her family.
