EUGENE, Ore. — Eugene Fire and Police were busy responding to at least six small fires in the downtown area Monday morning. The first call came in around midnight, which was for a dumpster fire on West 11th Avenue. That blaze was put out quickly, but crews deemed it suspicious.
Around 2:00 a.m., firefighters responded to a string of dumpster fires along W. 7th Alley, including the Goodyear tire store on W. 7th. They believe the fires were all set within about 30 minutes of each other, heading westbound along the alley.
The damage was minimal in all the fires, but firefighters say it could have been much worse.
“All these were dumpster fires that in most cases were away from buildings but in once case in particular was immediately adjacent to a two story apartment building, so it could have been significant property or life loss,” said Don Vaught, Battalion Chief with the Eugene Fire Department.
Officers are working with witnesses to find out who may be responsible for the fires.
