Downtown Springfield hasn’t always had the best reputation, but the city and local businesses like Tom and Johnny’s new beer and wine lounge are working to change that.
Over the past few years, the city has worked to push out the businesses linked to downtown’s less-than-stellar history. In July, the last of the old nightspots–The Silverlace Club–officially closed.
The push made way for new businesses like Tom and Johnny’s, which opened in October, to help change the face of downtown.
“I’m just tired of everybody from this area saying, ‘We’re going to Eugene.’ Eugene’s great and that’s no problem, but I just want to hear people say, ‘We’re going to Springfield for something.’ You know, we just really wanted to create a destination venue for people to come enjoy themselves,” said Thomas Knight, Tom & Johnny’s Owner.
The lounge will have 14 different local beers on tap, as well as 30 to 40 varieties of local wine to choose from.
Their grand opening event Thursday is a private one for close friends and family as well as some city leaders, but the new spot will be open to the public starting Friday.
