The site at St. Matthew’s Church on River Road is the first mobile food pantry offering assistance in the Eugene area.
The goal is to serve residents in the 97404 zip code where already it’s estimated 7 percent of the population qualifies for food boxes.
The food available includes fruits, vegetables, protein, grains and canned goods.
Every last Saturday of the month, the church will now open what it calls the Big Pray Pantry. It provides the site and volunteers while Food for Lane County provides the food.
Organizers say many people don’t think they may qualify for assistance when in reality they do. A household of one can receive food with a monthly income of no more than $1,722 and for a family four, no more than $3,554.
“A lot of people think, ‘Oh, I’m going to save the food for people who need it, but it’s here for people who need it, and if you need it, come get it,” said Carrie Copeland, Food for Lane County Mobile Pantry Coodinator.
Each month, about 480 people receive food assistance at mobile food pantries held at Guy Lee Elementary, Hamlin Middle School and Culp Creek.
Organizers hope to help even more with addition of the food pantry at St. Matthew’s, located at 4110 River Rd, Eugene, OR 97404.
No paperwork is needed, but those receiving help are asked to declare that they are eligible. The pantry is open Saturday, Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
