New Interim Police Chief Chosen

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A Springfield police captain will step up to fill the void left when Chief Jerry Smith steps down.

Richard Lewis has been with the department for nearly 30 years. He says he feels honored to have been chosen.

“The first thought I had was probably a tremendous sense of responsibility. We have 60,000 people in this city…and the police department is responsible for a lot of their safety and I feel that responsibility. So I hope that I project that in the job and always on the forefront of my mind,” Lewis said.

Lewis says he won’t apply for the permanent position. Instead, he says he’d like to focus on spending more time with his family.
