EUGENE, Ore. — Nordstrom Rack is ready to open its doors at Oakway Center in Eugene and people were already lining up outside the doors early Thursday morning.
The 32,000 square foot store is replacing a Border’s bookstore that closed in 2011. Property managers say Nordstrom Rack was their first choice and they spent months convincing the chain to open the store there. The addition is also good news for the local job market – the store hired about 50 employees from Eugene.
“It’s really important for us to reach out to the local community. We want to become a family here in Eugene and part of that definitely involves making sure we hire local employees,” says Nordstrom Rack representative Nicole Munson.
Nordstrom Rack says it did a lot of research before picking Eugene for a new location. Some of the things that made the city appealing were its large college population and that the closest Nordstrom is 60 miles away in Salem.
Opening day festivities kick off at 8 a.m. on Thursday with a live DJ, catered breakfast and giveaways. Lucky shoppers will also win $100 gift cards and one winner will get a $1,000 shopping spree. Additionally, the first 1,000 customers who make a purchase get a free tote bag.
