Olympian Speaks at Kelly Middle School

EUGENE, Ore. — A Brazilian track-and-field Olympian returned to Eugene this week to visit friends and volunteer his time with the students of Kelly Middle School.

Jose Luis Barbosa picked Kelly because of his relationship with school principal Jose da Silva. The two have been friends for more than 30 years, and Principal da Silva was visibly excited to introduce his friend to his students Wednesday.

“I can never repay him for all that he’s done for me. I could have never have asked for a better friend. I think of him as the brother I never had,” said Jose da Silva.

Barbosa spoke to sixth, seventh and eighth graders about overcoming obstacles, and his career as an Olympian runner.
