HOOD RIVER, Ore. — Oregon State Police is investigating the cause of a fatal commercial truck crash on I-84 Friday morning.
Troopers say around 5:12 a.m. a 2004 Freightliner truck pulling an empty container trailer was traveling westbound on I-84. The driver, Melvin Roy Schwark, 64, of Lyle, Wash., began to drift to the left and struck the guardrail. The truck and trailer continued westbound into the center median and crashed into a tree. A section of the tree section came to rest partially blocking the left eastbound lane.
Schwark was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators are looking into the possibility that he suffered a medical emergency while driving that may have been a factor in the crash.
