OSP Trooper Recovers at Home

Near THE DALLES, Ore. — The Oregon State Police trooper that was shot along I-84 Thursday is now recovering at home.

It all started with a traffic stop east of Biggs Junction near The Dalles. Investigators say the driver, 34-year-old John Van Allen II, got out and fired several shots at the trooper, 26-year-old Matthew Zistel. He was hit in the side but was able to return fire. The driver sped off but was found dead, slumped over the steering wheel, about a half-mile away with a gunshot wound.

Allen’s three children were in the backseat, but they were not hurt. They were placed in DHS custody, OSP said.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office completed an autopsy Friday morning and concluded Allen died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. According to the preliminary investigation, Allen was shot by the trooper during the exchange of gunfire.
