OSU Child Porn Violator in Nicaragua

PAPP

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Authorities say a man convicted of looking at child pornography at the Oregon State University library tried to flee to Nicaragua this week.

Authorities in Nicaragua say 37-year-old Cory Michael Papp had an expired passport, and on Thursday, they arrested him and sent him back to the U.S.

Papp was arrested in 2009 for looking at thousands of pornographic images of children on computers at the OSU Valley Library.

He served his 18-month sentence, but the U.S. Attorney’s Office says he fled before his post-prison supervision time was up.

“I just think it’s disgusting and horrible,” said OSU student Jon Williamson. “And it’s just really unfortunate that someone would use the computers to do that.”

OSU confirmed on Friday that Papp never attended the university. But the library is open to the community. OSU student Breanna Hagerman says that the public computers are in an open area and using them is a privilege.

“Anybody walking by would be able to see it,” she said. “And that definitely leaves a bad mark on OSU in general as well, and that’s not ok.”

But students say they still feel safe using the facility.

“I have a huge problem with what happened,” said OSU student Marie Hunt. “I’ve always felt super safe here, and I’m not saying that makes me feel less safe or comfortable using the library. But it’s sickening to know that somebody would feel so comfortable doing that. I mean, it’s a very open and public area.”

There is no word yet on when Papp will be back in court.
