CORVALLIS, Ore. – Benton County Sheriff’s Office Marine Deputies responded to a water rescue Monday involving members of the Oregon State University Crew Team.
Around 4:51 p.m. deputies were dispatched to the Willamette River at the Harrison Street Bridge. The OSU Crew Team was practicing with multiple boats, when one of the boats struck the west pier of Harrison Street Bridge.
All nine team members were thrown from the boat and into the river. None of them were wearing flotation devices because crew boats are exempt from normal requirements.
A coach on a prop-powered boat was able to safely retrieve all of the crew members. One crew member complained of slight head pain, but there were no other injuries.
The crew boat was wrapped around the pier. The $35,000 valued boat was torn in half and considered a total loss.
