OSU Researchers Warn of Erosion Dangers

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Researchers at Oregon State University say Oregon’s beaches are in jeopardy. With rising sea levels and a lack of new sediment coming in, bluffs and dunes on the coast are seeing more erosion.

They say the central and northern shores are seeing more erosion than the southern Oregon coast.

The researchers recommend doing research before buying any beachfront property.

“Get to know the part of the coast that you’re going to be developing or purchasing,” said Peter Ruggiero. “And if it’s an area that has experienced hazards in the past or is projected to experience them, then maybe think twice about it.”

The scientists say if sea levels continue to rise, the coast will continue to see more erosion.
