SEATTLE, Wash.– Jamie Weisner scored 21 points and Gabriella Hanson added 16 but it wasn’t enough as Oregon State’s spectacular season came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Tuesday 78-69 to the Stanford Regional top-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Beavers couldn’t overcome a subpar shooting night, hitting 38.5 percent from the field, and serious foul trouble that forced Weisner, Hanson and Ruth Hamblin out of the game. Three other OSU players ended the game with four personals during a stretch when the team was fouling to lengthen the game; No. 8 overall and SEC champion South Carolina took advantage of the opportunities making 34-of-43 free throw attempts compared to the Beavers’ 9-of-18.
The Beavers finished the season 24-11 overall and tied for second in the Pac-12 Conference – after being predicted to finish eighth in the league by the coaches. It was the first NCAA Tournament appearance for OSU since 1996 and head coach Scott Rueck was the Pac-12 Coach of the Year as selected by the media.
Tuesday also marked the final game for the team’s lone senior, forward Alyssa Martin. Martin ended her career with 985 career points.
Below are some key facts and figures for the season:
-Oregon State’s 24 wins tied for the most in school history (1982-83).
-OSU’s 55-36 win against Middle Tennessee was their third in the NCAA Tournament and first since beating Tennessee State in overtime, 88-75, on March 17, 1995.
-The Beavers held MTSU to just 36 points and 23 percent shooting. Both are Oregon State NCAA Tournament bests. The 36 points are the lowest for any team in the Big Dance since Notre Dame allowed just 35 points to St. Bonaventure in the 2012 Sweet Sixteen.
-Ruth Hamblin leads the nation with 141 blocks this season
-Sydney Wiese scored a career-high 26 points on Sunday, her sixth game of 20+ this season. That total tied for the second most in OSU NCAA Tournament history. Judy Spoelstra had 26 against LBSU on March 24, 1983 and Tanja Kostic put up 28 against Alabama on March 16, 1994.
-Wiese also scored 500 total points this season, just three shy of Natalia Mattick’s OSU freshman record of 503 from 1990-91. The Beavs have had a 500-point scorer on 18 occasions previously, but not since Casey Bunn in 2006-07.
-Wiese made 112 3-pointers this season, which is already seventh on the school’s career list.
