Parents Worry About Sizzurp

EUGENE, Ore. — A drink popular with teens is gaining attention from Lane County Public Health.

Health leaders say they’ve been getting a high volume of calls regarding an addictive concoction known as Sizzurp. It’s a mixture of prescription-strength cough medicine–like Codeine–Sprite and pieces of Jolly Rancher candy.

“Some of these really powerful anti-psychotics and other drugs in what kids think is harmless is definitely not harmless. It causes a host and variety of different side effects,” said Jason Davis, Lane County Public Health Public Information Officer.

Side effects of the mixture include temporary paralysis, numbness, kidney and liver problems. It can also lead to overdose.
