Pipes Burst on OSU Campus

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Monday, the first day of final examinations was cancelled because of the stormy weather. On Tuesday, frozen water pipes put Oregon State University in more of a disarray.

The final exam schedule has already changed, and now the time and place of many exams have also changed.

“This week has been chaotic!” said OSU sophomore Erica Ko. “It’s just hard to figure out how to manage my time after I already planned everything out.”

“I’m trying to just take it day by day and I’m trying to make sure I’m not crazy because I have to stay concentrated if I want to do well,” said sophomore Ethan Johnson. “And I have to do well.”

But rescheduling the final schedule is not the only problem. Frozen water pipes have burst across campus, rescheduling and relocating more final exams to be held in Gill Coliseum and Langton Hall Gymnasium.

Milam Hall is home to many large lecture classes, but on Tuesday and Wednesday, the water in the building was not working after a water pipe froze.

On Wednesday, students were relocated to Gill Coliseum.

“The setup has been great,” said an ecology assistant professor, Rebecca Terry. “It’s actually more spacious than our normal classroom.”

But the new arrangement threw off some students. Some were even a little late because they did not get the message on time that the classroom had changed locations.

Johnson says finals week is the worst possible time for students for a storm to hit.

“Everyone’s disoriented,” he said. “Having to prepare for your finals differently just kind of accumulates to a bunch of chaos.

“Our ecology final exam is worth thirty percent of our final grade. So I mean it’s a big part of your grade. You have to do well on this if you want to do well in the class. And I need to do well.”

Faculty say despite the chaos, OSU has done a good job managing the last minute changes.

“You just gotta roll with it,” Terry said. “It is what it is. It’s weather!”

The registrar’s office says even if pipes are fixed by the end of the week, final examinations will remain where they are currently scheduled to be.
