Plans to expand YMCA into West Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. — The Eugene City Council heard more about the long-developing proposal to build a new YMCA in the Bethel area.

Councilors held a work session Monday night to get an update on the project.

They say the plan calls for a 10-thousand square foot building off Legacy Drive. They say it could eventually expand and be home to a swimming pool and even the community library.

Councilor Greg Evans says there’s currently a lack of suitable recreation services in the area and this type of building is much needed.

“The Y would be very welcome in terms of adding to that supply and creating more synergy if you will to recreational services in our community,” Evans said.

Councilors say the Y is a ways from starting construction, if at all. They estimate it could be three to four years down the line.

They plan to hold another work session on the proposals over the coming months.
