Plastic Bag Ban Begins Wednesday

EUGENE, Ore. — It’s been talked about for years. Now, Eugene’s plastic bag ban goes into effect Wednesday, May 1.

The city council approved the ban in October, keeping plastic bags out of stores.

Retailers can still offer paper bags to shoppers but for a five-cents per bag fee.

Some store mangers are excited about the ban though, saying plastic bags were just another expense.

“It’s definitely a money saver, and we also offer canvas bags and reusable bags to sell to people who want to have that option,” said Rosie Vuylsteke, New Frontier Market Manager.

Stores will not be inspected for still offering plastic bags but can be investigated if someone files a complaint.
