Police Arrest Riddle Elk Hunter

RIDDLE, Ore. — Police arrested a Riddle man for illegally killing an elk at the end of August.

Jim Martin, 42, is being held for Unlawful Possession of a Bull Elk and Unlawful Possession of an Altered Firearm.

Officers were called to the Nickel Mine area near Riddle where they received an anonymous report of a rifle shot. Oregon State Police approached a group of men and Martin, who was pulling a trailer containing a dead elk. Martin told police he killed with a bow, but police seized the elk for further examination because the wound looked like it came from a bullet.

Police searched Martin’s residence where they seized evidence and two firearms, including a handgun with the serial number ground off. Martin was then lodged in the Douglas County Jail.

Awesome work from the osp troopers and the individual who reported the gun shot for busting this scumbag. He definitely is a perfect explanation of the “south county” high class citizen. Throw him in the middle of a clear cut and let the honest hunters use him for target practice. Just kidding. Great work

This is a classic example of BONE HEAD LAW ENFORCEMENT. This man is a proud BOW HUNTER. He unknowingly shot an elk with a bow that some other idiot had already shot with a rifle. So, YOU sir, should keep your judgemental, pretentious mouth shut, this case is a sham put together by a poor excuse of Oregon State Police seeking to make a public example out of an innocent man, because they can’t do their job properly. “Further examination” should have put him in the clear once they realized that the kill shot was from an arrow, not a bullet. Also, once they ran ballistics, they would have been able to determine that the bullet did not come from one of Mr. Martin’s firearms. OSP refuses to admit they were in the wrong so they are trying to nail him for unrelated charges

You, Jay, are the perfect example of an illiterate American. I agree with Anonymous 100%. It’s sad that the news won’t publish both sides of the story.
