Crash Closes Beltline for Six Hours

EUGENE, Ore. — An early morning crash shut down the eastbound lanes of the Beltline Highway for nearly six hours Sunday. The crash happened near the River Road exit just before 5 a.m.

Eugene Police said a Brian Andrew Bierce, 25 of Fresno, was travelling the wrong way on Beltline and hit another car head on at the River Road overpass. Chanreuang Jones, 58 and Danny Thomas Jones, 60, both of Sandy, were in the car Bierce hit; Chanreuang Jones was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Danny Thomas Jones and Bierce suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Although police have not released the cause of the crash, investigators said they believe alcohol was a contributing factor.

During the investigation officers shut down the eastbound lanes of the overpass. Crews re-routed drivers off of the highway at River Road, causing traffic to back up for miles.

Investigators said when crashes like this happen, they only have one shot to get all of the evidence collected, which is why police kept the highway closed for hours.

“Once you open the road up, especially with ODOT we can’t go back in and close the road down and redo it, so it’s easier just to hold it the first time and get everything you need instead of trying to go back at a later time,” said Dale Dawson, EPD crash investigator.

Police said both drivers are lucky this was not a direct head on collision. Investigators said it appears the side headlights of both cars were the point of impact in the crash.
