EUGENE, Ore. — An overnight house fire quickly turned into a death investigation in south Eugene.

The Eugene Police Forensic Investigation Unit has been on the scene since just after midnight in the 2000 block of Elk Avenue, right next to Hendricks Park.

Police were called to a fire there early Wednesday morning, but after just one hour into the investigation, the red crime scene tape went up after they found someone dead inside the home.

Police haven’t released any other information, but they are calling the fire suspicious.

Neighbors in the area say they heard either an explosion or gunshots just after midnight before the fire was reported. They also say there was just one man living in the home, George Wasson, a retired University of Oregon staff member.

Wasson was the Assistant Dean of Students and Academic Counselor for the University of Oregon for more than 20 years, and neighbors said he was very friendly and an active part of the community.
