Police Scanner Blocks Public

EUGENE, Ore. — Soon the public will no longer be able to listen in to police scanner traffic in Eugene.

Eugene Police say they are encrypting their radio channel starting next weekend to improve safety for officers.

Officers say this will prevent a suspect from listening to police activity and the public from spreading information that has not yet been confirmed.

EPD is allowing media outlets to sync up to their main channel but they will have to pay a monthly fee.
