EUGENE, Ore. — One man was hospitalized after he was assaulted while taking a walk with his wife Monday night.

Eugene Police say they responded to a call on the 800 block of Stephens Drive just before 11 p.m. They say a couple passed three men who had been breaking into cars along River Road and taking things. When the suspects noticed the couple, they allegedly assaulted one of the victims with a knife.

EPD was able to locate two of the suspects nearby, but were still searching for the third. They say the couple was just in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

“Stay in lighted areas, sometimes when you’re walking home at night if you can walk with a group of friends, that’s always safe. Having a cell phone on if you do have an emergency, so you can call 9-1-1,” recommends Demian San Miguel with EPD.

The victim was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Stay in lighted areas, walking in groups, is ALWAYS safe?

Call 9-1-1? Where’s the suggestions that people are responsible for their OWN safety? When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. Don’t allow yourself to get INTO dangerous situations to begin with, but as a last resort, the most effective tool of self defense isn’t a cell phone, it’s a firearm. Get trained, Get licensed to carry concealed, and be responsible for yourself.

The police have no legal duty to respond to your calls for help, and if they CAN make it to you, it won’t be in time to protect you, they’ll get there in time to take a report.

I was driving home from work last night (about 10:45) and as I turned on to Park Ave. off of River Road there was a group of 3 guys walking down the middle of the road, I honked at them and they started yelling obscenities and flipping me off, I quickly drove away.
