Police Warn of UO Athlete Magazine Scam

EUGENE, Ore. — A familiar scam has emerged in Eugene with a new twist.

The University of Oregon Police Department says people are selling fraudulent magazine subscriptions but that’s not the only lie.

Community members also reported that these salespeople are claiming to be UO athletes. One particular seller is claiming they are a member of the softball team at the UO.

When the athletic department checked with all its varsity sports and club sports, it found that no team is doing a magazine fundraiser and wanted to alert the community.

“Now that the word is out about this misrepresentation with sports programs at the U of O, the scam artist could change up their pitch. So, generally people should always be aware,” said Kelly McIver, UO Police Department.

UOPD wants to remind people to verify the charity or program the seller says they’re affiliated with.
