EUGENE, Ore. — If Christmas is all about spending time with family and opening up gifts, the day after Christmas is about spending time in the mall, returning some of those gifts and doing a little more shopping.
You would think folks would try to avoid the malls after spending so much time in them during the days leading up to Christmas, but it was clear that wasn’t the case Wednesday at Valley River Center.
Shoppers were in and out of the mall all day. While many were doing some returns and exchanges, just as many were taking advantage of the after-holiday sales with gift cards they just got Tuesday.
“I think it’s something to do. I think it’s fun to come to the mall when it’s full. It’s fun to see people you know. Plus I think it’s the spirit of ‘I just got a Christmas gift and I need to get rid of it right now.’ When you have teenagers and young kids, they don’t want to wait,” said shopper Ken Brown.
Shoppers weren’t surprised to hear that recent reports for pre-Christmas sales were down this year. Some were even glad, hoping this meant better deals for them as stores try to move stuff off their shelves.
If you haven’t gotten your fill of shopping, the mall will be open the rest of the week from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and until 7 p.m. on Sunday and New Year’s Eve.
