Protesters Rally for Homeless Rights

EUGENE, Ore. — Those fighting for a place for the homeless let their intentions be heard well before Monday’s city council meeting.

A group called Safe Legally Entitled Emergency Place to Sleep (SLEEPS) held a rally outside the Lane County Courthouse.

Demonstrators say the city council ignored them during the last meeting, so they thought this would get their attention. They even set up a mini camping site, which is part of their demands of the council.

“(We) asked that the council lift the camping ban from dusk until dawn and to create some designated camping sites with toilets, garbage collection, and an ability to have safe fire,” said rally organizer Jean Stacey.

EPD was on scene Monday, monitoring the protestors.

Since it’s the Lane County’s property that they’re on right now, it’s up to the county if they can stay there as they intend.
