Public Transit Ridership Up 1.5% in 2012

(CNN) — Last year was a great year for public transit systems across the country.

More people used public transportation in 2012 than in 2011. That’s according to new statistics from the American Public Transportation Association.

Americans’ use of subways, commuter trains, light rail, trolleys and buses was up 1.5 percent last year compared to 2011–that’s about 154 million rides.

Experts say the high cost of gas and more public transit options have fueled the increasing ridership.
