Chief Fandrey was on vacation with his family in Elkton over the weekend. His family found him unresponsive after he had gone to lie down after not feeling well. Douglas County Sheriff Department representatives have ruled out foul play, but the cause of his death is unknown.
Chief Fandrey was hired by the City of Reedsport in May of 2010 following the departure of former Police Chief Sean Essex.
Reedsport City Manager Jonathan Wright said the following in a release Monday: “Chief Fandrey led his department by example and held himself and his officers to the highest ethical and moral standard. Despite shrinking revenues, he championed many projects that resulted in better training and equipment for his personnel. Chief Fandrey’s matter of fact, by the book demeanor earned him the highest respect within the law enforcement community. He was, in every possible sense of the word, a ‘professional.’ Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
Reedsport Police Sergeant Tom Beck has been temporarily appointed interim police chief.
A memorial service for Police Chief Fandrey will be held in Reedsport at the Pacific Auditorium in Reedsport High School on Sunday, July 14, at 3 p.m.
