Renters Warned About Real Estate Scam

Rental ScamEUGENE, Ore. — A Eugene man is warning others about a rental scam. Art Tegger says he found an unbelievable deal on a rental in West Eugene. But, when he stopped by to see the home, he found out it was on the market for sale, not rent. He’s urging others to be very careful when searching for a new place to live.

Tegger says, “Ask questions and don’t be afraid to ask someone who’s there, who may be involved or even a neighbor, because there’s all kinds of information available, but you have to be a little bit bold to ask that.”

Tegger says the person trying to rent the property had e-mailed him a long story and request for financial information. The homeowner says several people have stopped by about renting the home since he put it up for sale. He is in the process of filing a report with the police department.

I had the exact same thing happen to me on a place in Albany about a month ago. My listing was found via Craigslist. When I arrived at the location a Realtor happened to be there showing off the house to a potential buyer. She said that 5 other people stopped to look at the place they thought was for rent.

I am a local real estate agent. I have a house listed for sale in the Santa Clara area. It is vacant but has my real estate sign in the yard. I got a call from my office telling me that my house was on Craigs List listed for rent with all the pictures of the house in the ad. I immediately flagged the ad as false and responded to the ad through Craigs list telling whoever posted the ad that I had turned them in, flagged their ad and to stop posting bogus homes for rent. I also got an email later from some unknown person asking me if the house was still for sale. When I responded offering to show it to them I did not get a response. My feeling was that they were checking to see if it was still being monitored.
