NEWPORT, Ore. — Oregon State University researchers are trying to capture the energy of waves with a new piece of technology.
Last week, the Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Innovations group placed a wave energy buoy two miles off Yaquina Head.
They are gathering data on its potential impact on marine life.
Scientists say this is the first of its kind in the United States. The only other research buoy is in UK waters.
OSU researchers say the project could go hand in hand with testing wave energy systems while not distrubing marine life.
