SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Local residents are getting a chance to learn about the inner workings of the Springfield Police Department thanks to its Citizens Police Academy.
The program has been going on for about 25 years now, and coordinators say each year the class just gets bigger and bigger.
This year 35 students fill a room in the Springfield Justice Center every Wednesday night. It’s where these regular citizens from all over, not just Springfield, get the chance to learn more about the men and women who patrol the streets every day.
“It’s taken the fear away and it’s made me feel like…all law enforcement really exist to help us live together well,” said Elizabeth Lyon, Citizen Academy student.
SPD says it also gains some valuable new helpers. The department is currently looking for volunteers to help with fleet maintenance.
To clarify, you don’t have to go through the course to volunteer. The department will gladly welcome anyone’s donated time.
