SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — More details are surfacing from the fatal shooting that happened on Bob Straub Parkway in Springfield last Wednesday.

Springfield police say they’re still conducting the investigation but they have made progress on a few details.

The crash which happened just before 8 p.m. Wednesday night on Bob Straub Parkway involved two drivers, 53 year-old David Crofut and 34 year-old Gerald Strebendt after what police are calling a road rage incident and crash.

Investigators say after the crash both men got out of their cars.

What led to the shooting is still unknown, but Strebendt claims the shooting was self defense.

We also know that Strebendt’s gun was the only weapon found at the scene.

“I don’t know the brand right now but it was similar to an AR-15,” said Sgt. Dave Lewis, Springfield Police.

“You know the 9-1-1 tape will speak for itself. There’s really no point of commenting on that at this time,” said Mike Arnold, Strebendt’s attorney.

Police say they’re still conducting criminal background checks on both men.

Sgt. Lewis says the Springfield Police Department is conducting the investigation.

Although he does say a number of Springfield police officers have worked out at Strebendt’s gym, he says it’s not a conflict of interest because none of them are on the case.

Sgt. Lewis says we can expect to hear back from the district attorney on any charges that may be filed in the next few weeks.

I beleave the guy should be in jail. So what the cops worked out there. That still does not make it right. So what anyone who hits anyone can get away with murder. Just think what if that was your child how would you all feel then. The guy has not right trying to claim self defense when the other guy had no gun. No matter what else the situation
    is.

What I don’t understand is why somebody get shot and killed with many unanswered questions and KEZI isn’t following up on this story and what’s up with the SPD on this case?. Where are the family interviews? Tape of the 911 call(s)? toxicology reports? Is this being brushed under the carpet because the shooter works with the SPD in training them to fight? Who ran into who? Story says that it started on Maim Street how did it end in a death on Bob Straub Parkway? Was Crofut being followed to his house? Was the shooter being followed? Come on guys. Lets not just let this go unanswered. I heard that Crofut was shot in the head. WTF? Why does anyone need to drive around carrying a gun similar to an AR-15? Too many unanswered questions on this case is making me really feel uneasy with the SPD and this case. I think this case need more exposure then what it is getting. Time for National news to pick this story up.

Well, lets see what happens. If the elder victim didnt have a weapon..the shooter needs to go to prison..Just that simple but I think an outside agency should be doing the investigation..I dont trust Springtucky with doing it right

What ? you expect some kind of real and fair justice from a city that is as corrupt and arrogant as Springfield.I have lived in a lot of different places and this place tops them all .The Cops and the rest of the justices are mostly liers, cheaters, self centered ego maniacs.
Isn’t there a law about using excessive force in self-defence ?If infact it was self defence at all

It is 2014. This morning I was tailgated in hammer lane for a couple miles on Belt Line by guy in nice $40,000.00 pick up. I was traveling between 65-70 mph in a 55. Slow lane full. When right lane clears, right blinker goes on, I get over but not after the driver damn near touches bumper. All at 65-70 mph. Do drivers like this need to be shot? Probably not. But if there is a tech person out there that could come up with rear small portable camera to document over the top aggressive tailgaters (speed/distance) money would be made.
