SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — More details are surfacing from the fatal shooting that happened on Bob Straub Parkway in Springfield last Wednesday.
Springfield police say they’re still conducting the investigation but they have made progress on a few details.
The crash which happened just before 8 p.m. Wednesday night on Bob Straub Parkway involved two drivers, 53 year-old David Crofut and 34 year-old Gerald Strebendt after what police are calling a road rage incident and crash.
Investigators say after the crash both men got out of their cars.
What led to the shooting is still unknown, but Strebendt claims the shooting was self defense.
We also know that Strebendt’s gun was the only weapon found at the scene.
“I don’t know the brand right now but it was similar to an AR-15,” said Sgt. Dave Lewis, Springfield Police.
“You know the 9-1-1 tape will speak for itself. There’s really no point of commenting on that at this time,” said Mike Arnold, Strebendt’s attorney.
Police say they’re still conducting criminal background checks on both men.
Sgt. Lewis says the Springfield Police Department is conducting the investigation.
Although he does say a number of Springfield police officers have worked out at Strebendt’s gym, he says it’s not a conflict of interest because none of them are on the case.
Sgt. Lewis says we can expect to hear back from the district attorney on any charges that may be filed in the next few weeks.
