Runners Race in First Run of 2014

EUGENE, Ore. — It wouldn’t be a new year in Tracktown without a New Year’s Day run.

Wednesday morning around 270 people ran around Valley River Center for the first run. But this wasn’t technically the first run of the year, since the same organizers put on a race at the stroke of midnight.

Runners at both races had the option to run a five or ten kilometer course.

“Runners, walkers, people just starting out wanting to get into the running scene. I’d say that we probably have a 50/50 percent split of your avid everyday runners and people that just want to start the year off right and start a new tradition,” said race organizer James Houghton.

The majority of runners rain the five kilometer race, but around 40% of participants took on the longer ten kilometer course.
