Salem Man Struck by Car on I-5

SALEM, Ore. – Oregon State Police say a man was struck by a car after fleeing a traffic stop Friday.

OSP says around 11 p.m. a trooper attempted to stop a vehicle for a headlight equipment violation near Blossom Street and Niles Avenue. The driver failed to yield to the trooper and sped off, but the driver stopped a half mile down the road as the vehicle became disabled.

Troopers say the driver, Francisco Montalyo Jr., 26, of Salem, got out of the car, refused to listen to the trooper’s commands and staggered around making suicidal threats.

While the trooper waited for back up, Montalyo got back into his car and tried to drive away but the car wouldn’t move. He got out of the car and ran away on foot.

Around 11:18 p.m., a report came in of a man struck by a pickup in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near milepost 260.

OSP and the Salem Fire Department responded to the scene and found Montalyo seriously injured. He was transported by ambulance to the Salem Hospital.

Montalyo faces pending charges.

The driver of the pickup, Allen J. Bayer, 52, of Gresham, was arrested for DUII. He was cited and released to appear at a later court date.
